What is Acupuncture?
The intent of acupuncture is to promote
health, restore balance and alleviate pain and suffering. The perspective
from which an acupuncturist views health and sickness hinges on concepts of
"vital energy", "energetic balance" and "energetic imbalance". Just as the
Western medical doctor monitors the blood flowing through blood vessels and the
messages traveling via the nervous system, the acupuncturist assesses the flow
and distribution of "vital energy" within its pathways, known as "meridians and
channels". The acupuncturist is able to influence health and sickness by
stimulating certain areas along these "meridians". Traditionally these
areas or "acupoints" are stimulated by fine, sterile and disposable needles or
through acupressure (massage stimulation of the points), but can also include
electrical stimulation and herbs.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?
Acupuncture can be sensational but not
necessarily hurt. One may feel a dull, achy sensation or nothing at all.
The fine needles are designed to be painless and are inserted in a quick way.
Depending upon what is being treated once the needle is in it may be stimulated
to have a greater effect.
I am Currently in Receiving Physical
Therapy, Can I Still Get Acupuncture?
Yes. Acupuncture can work very well
in conjunction with your physical therapy program, but is also a stand alone
modality. All treatment plans are individually designed to meet your
health and wellness goals.
Do I Need a Prescription From My Doctor
for Acupuncture?
No, a prescription is not necessary.
Will My Health Insurance Pay for
Acupuncture?
At this time, Westwood Physical Therapy's
acupuncture program is cash only. However, we will provide you with a
receipt to submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement upon
request. Many insurance policies will reimburse out of pocket costs for
acupuncture, however as every policy is different it is highly advised that you
call your carrier for more information.
How Much Does It Cost?
Initial visit/evaluation is $120 and
approximately 90 minutes. Follow-up visits are $80 and approximately 50
minutes, however we are currently offering a 10% discount for all first time
clients! Prices are subject to change.
How Should I Prepare for My Acupuncture
Appointment?
Fill out the initial appointment forms if
it is your first appointment. For all appointments, please make sure to
have eating something before and stay away from caffeine, alcohol or stimulants
that day if possible.
How frequently Will I Need Acupuncture
Treatments?
It depends upon your condition and
treatment goals. Some issues may require treatment twice a week or twice a
month; others will be treated as often as possible until the issue resolves.
What are Chinese Herbs and What are They
Used For?
Chinese herbs can be prescribed in many
different forms such as pills, powder (mixed with hot water) or raw (cooked and
made into a tea). Chinese Herbs are beneficial mostly for chronic internal
issues like allergies, digestion or menstrual disorders, but may be prescribed
for some acute conditions like sinus infection or the common cold.
