Temporomandibular Dysfunction (also known as TMJD or TMD)
Westwood Physical Therapy’s TMD physical therapy treatment protocols have been proven to be very effective and helped hundreds of people who have TMD.  The clinic director is the original developer of the TMJ physical therapy protocol used at the UCLA School of Dentistry.
Westwood Physical Therapy’s Temporomandibular Dysfunction Program begins with a thorough assessment, direct intervention and patient education.  Our goal is to decrease pain, improve posture and maximize your function through the use of  efficient and effective evidence-based physical therapy services.





Our program begins with an evaluation by a skilled physical therapist which  includes:

  • Cervical/Thoracic Range of Motion
  • Temporomandibular Range of Motion
  • Posture
  • Pain
  • Palpation for tissue integrity
  • Strength
  • Intervertebral mobility
  • Craniovertebral instability
  • Visible signs of tension
  • Respiration
  • Headaches


Our Focus is Function
Your physical therapist will  educate you regarding the critical elements of healing, anatomy and the biomechanics of the masticatory system and cervical/thoracic spine.  Emphasis is placed on the importance of proper posture and body mechanics. Treatment for TMD will also include:

  • Modalities as needed for pain and tissue healing
  • Progressive stretching activities with  an emphasis on postural correction
  • Progressive strengthening activities
  • Training for proper body mechanics
  • Joint mobilization as indicated
  • Intra- and extra-oral massage
  • Functional exercise progression
  • Work toward specific home, work, recreation and sports goals
  • Instruction in a home exercise program with focus on posture, flexibility and strengthening exercises and self mobilization techniques
  • Relaxation/stress management instruction
